What is a Central Service Instrument Technician (CSIT)?

A CSIT is prepared with the knowledge and skills to work in the challenging, fast-paced and highly technical environment of the Central Service Department of a healthcare facility. A graduate of the program will be introduced to the varied process of the procurement of surgical supplies and equipment. Among their responsibilities, they decontaminate, clean, sterilize, assemble, store, and distribute medical devices and supplies in hospital and clinical settings, especially those used in surgery.

Where can a CSIT work?

A graduate of the Central Service (Instrument) Technician Program may be employed as a Central Sterile Supply Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, Certified Registered Central Service Technician, Sterile Preparation Technician, Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, Medical Supply Technician, Sterile Technician, Material Reprocessing Technician, and Surgical Equipment Technician upon successfully passing the IAHCSMM Certification exam. This person may be employed in the Central Processing Department of a hospital or surgical centers.
